How To: Hair Masks

There's no doubt that all hair types need hydration, especially during the winter months. Dry, colour-treated, chemically processed, wavy, curly, and coily hair is more prone to split ends and texture damage, whereas well-hydrated hair is more flexible – making it more resilient against damage.

For this reason, we recommend using conditioner every wash day, but also suggest incorporating our lush hair mask into your routine once or twice weekly. By ensuring your strands are deeply hydrated, not only will your hair be stronger, shinier, and softer, but its elasticity will also improve – allowing your hair to grow longer as it becomes more resilient to breakage.

What are hair masks and how do they work?

In theory, hair masks are deep conditioning treatments designed to nourish, repair, and strengthen strands for softer and more lustrous hair. In reality, many masks on the market incorporate problematic ingredients (such as mineral oils and silicones) that give the illusion of healthy hair while actually coating it and ultimately blocking beneficial ingredients from penetrating the hair cuticle. Hårklinkkken’s rich, smooth Hair Mask is free from problematic constituents and works by providing intense hydration and moisture, restoring elasticity and preventing breakage, and increasing the shine and smoothness of your strands.

Which hair types benefit from hair masks?

This kind of deep conditioning treatment is suitable for all hair types – especially dry, damaged, wavy, curly, coily, colour-treated or otherwise processed strands.

What's the best application method for hair masks?

An overnight treatment will deliver better results. We typically recommend this to our clients who use our Hair Mask as part of their routine. Apply enough of the Hair Mask to cover the lengths of the hair, pressing it into strands. Leave it on overnight and rinse out in the morning. Many clients notice an immediate difference in the softness of their hair.

Should hair masks also be applied to the scalp?

We don’t recommend applying your hair mask to the scalp as it is specifically formulated to hydrate the lengths of your hair.

How often should you use hair masks?

While everyone’s hydration requirements vary, it is good to start using our hair mask twice a week. If you feel your hair needs more or less hydration, you can adjust your routine as required. Keep in mind that the seasons will affect how well your hair can maintain hydration, so we recommend increasing your use during cold, dry, winter months.

Can you overuse hair masks?

It’s possible to overuse hair masks, especially if they contain problematic ingredients. Many masks on the market incorporate silicones, waxes, and various proteins that create build up – which may leave your hair brittle, limp, or greasy. Our products are all formulated without ingredients like this, and are also free of artificial colours, perfumes, parabens and mineral oils. But your hair type and routine will also inform how often you need to use it.
